In Conversation with Rebecca N. Thompson, MD

Through intimate first-person narratives, Held Together weaves the story of Dr. Thompson's complicated path toparenthood as a young primary care physician into the stories of her patients, friends, and medical colleagues. Fromdevastating to triumphant, from tear-stained to too-awkward-not-to-laugh, from universal to nearly unimaginable, this collaborative storytelling project captures the extraordinary moments hidden within ordinary lives and embraces—even celebrates—what can happen when nothing goes quite as we'd planned.

Dr. Thompson will be joined in conversation by Kristin Stevens to discuss how being vulnerable and honest about ourstruggles allows us to better support others through the unexpected, why we should honor grief and hardshipalongside so-called successes, how social contexts influence the ways we experience medical complications, how wecan draw on personal and community strength to create meaning in the face of challenges, and why exploringuncomfortable ideas may bring us comfort—and grant others permission to share their own less-than-straightforward stories too.
